Bill Braun says: I spent a fair portion of my preteen years without a TV in the house. I was exposed to the music of a lot of great musicians and writers - thanks to my father's passion for jazz and musicals (I miss you at the turntable, daddy-o). In seventh grade, a chance encounter with a friend's drumsticks during recess inspired me to take up 'el drumbo'. My mother's contribution (having been briefly in show biz herself) was to unintentionally and fully ignite my passion for percussion by telling me - that a career playing drums would, "at best, only lead to an a-- full of hemorrhoids" - which at worst, was a very acceptable preteen challenge. (I miss you too, mom). Anyway, after several iterations, I lucked into a band with three brothers-in-mind. We played a lot of gigs through high school and college, and after backing up several different people, went on the road with Danny O'Keefe who had just released 'Breezy Stories'. Other gigs followed, but it was Danny's unique sense of lyricism and free harmonic concept that inspired me to pursue a song writing relationship with him. Nowadays, I'm making up for any preadolescent TV deprivation I might have suffered by watching a mind-numbing daily dose of anything, as long as it's pixelated. Which leads me to believe that I too, am in danger of becoming 'King of the Blue Glow' - one of the tunes Danny and I have written for the album 'Don't Ask'. Hope you dig it. |
